The Founding of the Adelaide Junior Basketball League: A Historic Collaboration
The formation of the Adelaide Junior Basketball League (AJBL) marks a significant moment in Australian basketball history—one driven by the shared vision, passion, and leadership of four of South Australia’s most respected district clubs: the Central Districts Lions, North Adelaide Rockets, West Adelaide Bearcats and the Woodville Warriors.
These four clubs, each with a rich legacy of on-court success and off-court community engagement, have long stood as proud rivals in South Australian basketball. Yet in a bold and unprecedented move, they set aside competition to work together toward a common goal: to create a league that delivers a high-quality, inclusive, and sustainable grassroots basketball experience for all juniors.
Their combined enthusiasm and foresight laid the foundation for AJBL – a league designed not only to strengthen domestic competition but also to build a seamless pathway from entry-level basketball through to the elite district level. This collaboration ensures that every junior player, regardless of background or ability, has the opportunity to participate, grow, and excel.
